"The river is flowing five times faster than normal speed", said one of the store workers. It was a hot sunny day when we decided to rent kayaks and sail down the verde river. Fortunately or Unfortunately, it rained heavy the day before. My friends were pretty excited and were getting ready with swim shorts, sun glasses, sun screen, and backpacks with snacks and lots of water. It was funny because none of us knew how to swim but we were all wearing swim shorts. I laughed to myself and decided to jump in with the crowd as I didn't want to be the "spoil-sport".
I had tonnes of questions as it was not a guided tour and I was told that we are all by ourselves for 5 miles down the river. Doesnt matter how hard I tried to hide my fear, it seemed apparant the way I was being restless. My heart was pounding hard and I had to breathe harder to keep going. I secured my backpack to the rear end of the boat and tried to paddle with confidence.
Couple yards down the river, there was a huge branch hanging low over the river. I warned my friends and guided them to paddle away from the branch, which they all managed to do except for me... I had no clue how to deal with the hanging branch that I hit the branch and fell into the river. Those few seconds before I fell in the river, I wonder what I was thinking. My friends say I had the funniest expression of the year! For me, it seemed like a death invitation.
Thanks to my life jacket and to my other friends who guided me and helped me reach my boat. I some how managed to hold on to the boat and float towards the river bank where I readjusted my boat and hopped in for another fun ride. Now, I call that an adventure! :)
Will I do it again? I guess I will but with lot more caution :) May be I will learn how to swim by then!
